The Monty Hall Dilemma in Four Parts – #3 A Solution

Rubiks Cube“Suppose you’re on a game show, and you’re given the choice of three doors. Behind one door is a car, behind the others, goats. You pick a door, say number 1, and Monty Hall, who knows what’s behind the doors, opens another door, say number 3, which has a goat. Monty Hall then says to you, “Do you want to pick door number 2?” Is it to your advantage to switch your choice of doors?”

A central aspect of this problem is that Monty Hall KNOWS where the car and goats are. When there are two doors left and he opens one of them, he ALWAYS shows a goat. It is not a random 50:50 chance, he ALWAYS eliminates a ‘bad’ door.

Using a Blog to Generate Niche Ideas

Silver Surfer PosterWriting this blog has made me realise how much I enjoy two childhood hobbies - comics and painting. As a semi-retired  adult looking for extra income, the Internet enables me to earn money from these pastimes.

Firstly I intend to sell the remaining parts of my comic collection on eBay. The beauty of selling items this way is that I have to handle each comic to photograph them for the eBay listing.

These are comics that have been stored away and ignored for 30 years or more. Now I can look at each comic, admire the artwork, remind myself of some childhood memories and even re-read some of the good stories.

Adding Pictures and Links to Your Blog

Adding links to your wordpress blog is easy. Just highlight the words you want linked, and click the ‘chain’ icon in the toolbox above your text. If you move your cursor over the chain it tells you Insert/edit link”.

Enter a web address in the ‘Link URL’ box, and click Insert
Job done – except not quite!

IMPORTANT – Make sure you change the Target‘  to open link in a new window”, otherwise when visitors click the link, they will leave your blog – Not a good idea! Also you have a choice of where the link page appears. I always change the class’ to ‘align centre’ but that is just personal preference.

Blue Skies, Red Sunsets and a Red Moon

blue-skyI have been impressing a new girlfriend with my knowledge of the night sky. “Why is the Sky Blue?” she asked. Halfway through my explanation Margaret stopped me; “You’re making it up!” rang her accusation. Caught red-handed, and red faced I confessed, but promised to find out;

Blue Skies
Light from the Sun contains all the colours of the rainbow. However to reach us on earth it has to go through our atmosphere. The shorter blue wavelengths of light are the perfect size to interact with the main components of air – oxygen and nitrogen.

Pick and Mix Track Workout

Great session on the track last night – I worked really hard and the endorphins are still buzzing around (see ‘I’m a Drug Addict…….‘)  - hence this post.

There is a wide range of running abilities amongst my coaching group, so I always try and give them a choice of workout to suit their individual skills and ambition. The choice is always between Hard, Very Hard or Extremely Hard! Last night was a brand new session which worked really well.

The Monty Hall Dilemma in Four Parts – #2 Some Clues

An Apology: I was going to give the full solution here, but will now give my readers another chance to solve this themselves. A complete answer will be posted in Part Three.

“Suppose you’re on a game show, and you’re given the choice of three doors. Behind one door is a car, behind the others, goats. You pick a door, say number 1, and Monty Hall, who knows what’s behind the doors, opens another door, say number 3, which has a goat. Selling Information Products on eBay

Successful eBay traders have cheap lead-in prices to attract customers and build a list. Information products are cheap to reproduce, so using resale rights books and videos can easily fulfil this role.

On the other hand you don’t want to sell quality products too cheaply, when the customer may have been willing to pay a higher price!

I have resolved this problem by splitting all my Master Resale Rights products into two versions:

1) Basic eBook or Video Course.

2) eBook or Video Course with Master Resale Rights, web-pages, artwork, sales-pages, CD covers and labels.

Marvel Comic Artists – Steve Ditko

spiderman-by-steve-ditko1Jonathon Ross is a big comics fan and he produced a documentary for the BBC on his favourite artist Steve Ditko.

Ditko wasn’t my favourite, but I thought he was a great visual story teller, and I was impressed enough to paint one of his characters called ‘The Creeper’ which he created for DC Comics.

Ditko was influenced by the philosophies of Ayn Rand and this is reflected in the characters he created such as ‘Hawk and Dove’, also for DC Comics.

The Monty Hall Dilemma in Four Parts – #1 The Problem

This is a mathematical puzzle that seems to fly in the face of ‘common-sense’. Many people when explained the solution simply won’t accept it. Others may accept the answer but never really understand it.

The majority of readers will take some time, but eventually there will be a moment of epiphany and the solution will just click into place. The puzzle is about mathematical probabilities, which originated in a famous USA TV quiz show, hosted by Monty Hall.

Full details can be found in the book ‘The Power of Logical Thinking’ by Marilyn vos Savant. Marilyn also had a popular question and answer column in Parade magazine. One day she received the following question:

“Suppose you’re on a game show, and you’re given the choice of three doors. Behind one door is a car, behind the others, goats. You pick a door, say number 1, and Monty Hall, who knows what’s behind the doors, opens another door, say number 3, which has a goat. Monty Hall then says to you, “Do you want to pick door number 2?” Is it to your advantage to switch your choice of doors?”

I came to understand this problem in two stages. First I thought that switching doors would improve my winning odds from 1 in 3 to 1 in 2. Then after thinking about it for some more time I realised that switching doors actually doubled your chances of winning from 1 in 3 to 2 in 3!

I will let you ponder on this for a while, and then publish some solutions in my next post.
