Being Shortsighted

Mr MagooI have been shortsighted since the age of 14. I knew I had a problem when I could no longer sit at the back of the class – I couldn’t see the blackboard.

When I was 17 I crashed my scooter twice. My Mother gave me two bits of advice, get some glasses and buy a car! She thought I might be safer on four wheels.

Wearing glasses made a big difference. When I walked out of the opticians with my first pair, I was amazed that the walls had a patterned wallpaper! I thought it was just a blurry plain colour. :-)

Wearing glasses is a pain in the neck – or rather on the bridge of your nose, and behind the ears.

In my 30′s I started wearing contact lenses. First tried soft lenses, but got fed up with all the cleaning and sterilising you had to do. Difficult when I was drunk half the time. :-)

Another runner recommended ‘Hard Gas Permeables’, and they were great. I wore them for about 15 years.

As I approached my 50′s I noticed it was becoming harder to read, and I was going to need reading glasses. Life didn’t seem fair! Not only have I got the hassle of wearing contact lenses, but I have to carry around reading glasses as well. :-(

My solution was something the Russians had developed since before the Wall came down. They were very proud that the communist system had solved the problem, and the West didn’t have the technology.

It’s Laser Eye Surgery, and I will detail my experience in another post.

  1. That’s interesting, John. I have a friend who had a bad experience with that, sadly. Hope yours was a good one!

    Enjoy the journey.

Hello Mandy, I hope your friend didn't get 'dry eye', that's the problem with some laser surgery. I shall reveal what I discovered about this issue in my next post.

  2. Quite interesting, well I just wanted some songs and got your blog. Thanks for this one mate ;) I just loved it. An additional comment or feedback which I would like to give is that this theme is quite boring and you need to work on it but everything else I fine.
Thanks for visiting, I'm guessing that your eyesight is fine. I have a whole category on Music, but the bands reflect my age; Beatles, Pink Floyd, Oasis, Frankie Goes to Hollywood....... hope this hasn't put you off stopping by again! John

  4. Having to use glasses and contact lenses surely beats crashing a scooter. :) Good thing you decided to go for a surgery, I heard that it doesn’t hurt, at all. Good luck.

The laser surgery is quite frightening Mitch as you have to be awake with your eyes open. However you’re quite right, it doesn’t hurt and you see psychedelic patterns when the laser is used.
