Contact with Aliens by 2031

Russian scientists expect humanity to encounter alien civilisations within the next twenty years. “The genesis of life is as inevitable as the formation of atoms…..Life exists on other planets and we will find it within 20 years,” said Andrei Finkelstein, director of the Russian Applied Astronomy Institute.

Finkelstein says that 10% of the known planets circling suns in our galaxy resemble Earth. If water can be found there, then so can life.

I hope the Russians are right. I have always believed that our galaxy is teeming with life, but that the size of the universe, and the enormous space between solar systems meant that contact is highly unlikely.

Nothing can go faster than the speed of light, and with present technology  it would take thousands of years for spaceships to reach another habital area of the universe.

I had forgotten however that the humble radio wave travels at the speed of light, and we have inadvertently been sending messages into space since the 1930′s. By the 1980′s these radio waves will have travelled 50 light years where there are a number of star systems.

It will take another 50 years for any message/reply to be received here on Earth, which gives the Russian estimate of 2031. Fingers crossed I will still be alive to experience this first contact.

  1. How sad is this John, blog commentating at 8:30 on a Saturday evening. Mind you I am accompanied by a drink.

I have always believed that there is other life in the universe, why shouldn’t there be? I might not live to see it but you may.

You have not mentioned your running for a while John, are you still in training?

I have cut down my running Bill. I no longer enter races and just run 4 or 5 times a week to keep my weight down. I won’t be going to the Nottingham half marathon race this year.

I don’t think it’s sad commenting on a saturday night, it shows you must enjoy it alongside your glass of wine.

I wonder if the majority of people who believe there is life elsewhere in the universe are athiests? It diminishes religions view of the importance of man.

I had a feeling that your marathon days were over John, but at least you are still getting regular exercise at something you enjoy, which has to be a good thing.

That’s a good point about atheists and their views on life elsewhere in the universe, maybe it’s because atheists aren’t so restricted in their thinking.

  2. Hi John,

This post makes good sense. It is logical.

If we are the only ones in the grand universe teaming with life it would be that planet Earth is truly unique.

Fact- Other suns exist out in the universe.

Fact- Other planets exist out in the universe around these suns.

Fact- Water exists out in the universe.

When you look at the vastness of it all, I don’t think planet earth is all so unique.

There has got to be some kind of life out there. If not, what gives? The big question is life here really all that special?

As you said Terry life elsewhere in the universe is logical. Planet Earth can’t possibly be so unique that other planets out of the billions in our galaxy, wouldn’t share the same conditions for life.

When you look at the facts you outlined it would be much more surprising if life didn’t exist on other planets.

  3. When you think about it Life is like a bacteria growing all over the planet. Scientists have found the chemicals that can form life on asteroids and, like bacteria, just waiting for the right conditions to start the process.

I am sure there is life throughout the universe wherever the conditions are right.

  12. Hi John,
Well you’ve stirred the pot on this issue. Now you have a bunch guys surfing with the aliens in the comments section. The Area 51 guys. The Close Encounters Of The Whatever Kind guys. Let me set you all straight, as I have done no drinking and speak from experience as I manage “The Europa Files.net”. Aliens? You can bet your last dollar that there are Aliens! Like the vast diversity of life here on earth, as we make our way out into the Universe, the diversity there will deify the imagination.

The question always seems to be, not if there are Aliens, but have they visited the earth. I’d say considering the structure of the Universe, this is doubtful. The math is kinda tough!

    [Reply]

  13. You’re quite right Jeffrey, so far all the comments have come from alien believers. Unfortunately, as you have said, the vast distances involved together with the speed of light barrier means that it’s unlikely we have been visited by aliens. The maths says no.

The only contact that’s possible at the moment Robert is via radio wave messages. Physical contact doesn’t seem possible due to the vast distances involved and Einstein’s speed limit being the speed of light. 16. Hi John, hope all is well!

I’ve always believed we humans and the rest of Earth’s inhabitants are not the only living organisms in the Universe.

We as a human race are still discovering new species here on Earth and the majority of the ocean depths have still to be explored.

It’s only a matter of time before we discover new lifeforms elsewhere so even if it does take 50 years to find out John, I would guess that there will be something somewhere and if they are intelligent and similar to us (need oxegen, same foods, water etc) they will probably want our resources – OR if they are dissimilar maybe we could co-habitat if our resources and waste complement each other. (They use our waste material…and visa versa, hmm.. that’s a strange thought)

In any case if there are resources the human race needs, we’ll probably do our best as a species to take it and visa versa.

I once heard someone give an analogy of the human species and it could be interpreted as melancholy, but I don’t see it that way.

The analogy was that ‘the human race is like a bacteria, it multiplies and consumes and uses resources, then it multiplies more and spreads. The earth is infected and it will also spread to other planets if possible.’

    Life = Bacteria! :o )

You always bring out my imaginative side John, cheers!

    [Reply]

    John McNallyNo Gravatar Reply:

I heard a similar ‘bacteria’ quote in the film The Matrix. Humankind is compared to a bacteria which acts as a virus on mother Earth. It’s true when you look at it dispassionately.

    Hope you are well.

Its been a while, not been blog hopping due to injury. Making a slow recovery and making a effort to get back in to the swing of things :)

I hope the Russians are right, it just seems such a shame that in the vastness of space there would not be any other life forms.

Probability wise it would seem likely that there is other life out there…but would we be ready to encounter these life forms by 2031.

As the human race we have problems getting along with ourselves…who knows what would happen when we encounter an alien race!!

Just hope I am around to see it when it happens :)

  19. Hi John,

That’s a very interesting piece of information. It’s kind of scary to be able to make contact with aliens, but, well, how much more harm can they do than what we are already doing to our own race?

Regarding the math and the possibility of first contact being through only radio waves, I just had a different thought. What if aliens have found ways to transcend through space through a mechanism that doesn’t obey the time barrier? Something to do with black holes, maybe?

    Cheers,
    Mark

    [Reply]

    John McNallyNo Gravatar Reply:

Physical travel via black holes has been speculated. They are called ‘wormholes’ that connect blackholes throughout the universe. This concept was used in the Sci Fi film ‘Contact’.

If this is possible however I wonder why we have not already been visited by aliens? I still think the size of the universe and the physical laws that govern it prevent contact except through radio waves.
