Fat People Don’t Eat Breakfast

Unfortunately people struggling to control their weight often focus on limiting food intake. So they skip breakfast, have a small lunch and then finally have a proper meal in the evening, when they get home from work. If you recognise yourself here, then the bad news is that this is completely the wrong way to eat.

Cliches often exist for very good reason;  they have proven to be true through experience. The best cliche to remember for losing weight is; Breakfast like a King, Lunch like a Prince and Dine like a Pauper. Breakfast has been named for a very good reason –  it is to Break the Fast. Your body has probably not had any fuel for over 10 hours, and in the morning it needs a calorie intake for energy.

If you deny yourself breakfast the body goes into survival mode and slows down your metabolism to conserve energy. You will start to feel lethargic and irritable, and with a slow metabolism you have reduced your calorie burn. When you finally treat yourself to a proper meal in the evening, your body will have adapted to your eating habits.

To survive another self imposed fast, your body will therefore convert as much food as it can into fat, so that it has spare energy supplies for your next starvation regime. Eating breakfast has the double bonus of preventing fat storage AND raising the metabolic rate!

So eating early in the morning will actually burn up more calories.
Food for thought indeed :O)

  1. Hi John,

I haven’t eaten breakfast for years. Although I’m not a ‘fat’ person I do carry weight. I see what you are saying and will try to change my eating. Thank you once again.

    Enjoy the journey.

  2. Hi John,
I like this post. It it corrects a wrong idea that a lot of people have about diet.
indeed, breakfast is very important as it gives you the energy you need for the morning. People just need to avoid excess and have a reasonable meal.

    Keep up the good work

  3. Hello Mandy,
I did think twice about using the word 'fat' in my title, but in the end went with it just for effect - no slight intended. So many people make the mistake of missing breakfast that if just a few changed their habits by reading this post, it will have been worth it. Let me know if you do manage to change, and particularly if you also lose any weight :O)

  5. Hi John –

Brilliant post as usual. It’s so true and people just don’t “get it”. Personally I always go for the “full english” whenever I have chance – although this is actually quite rare! And I love a bowl of strawberries when they are in season too!

    All the best!

  6. Hello Susan,
It's a shame that so many people, as you say, "don't get it". I also go for the 'full English' but that's only when I'm travelling and someone else has made it :O)
My normal breakfast is 2 Shredded Wheat, 2 Oatibix, muesli and a bananna all mixed up in the same bowl - (I've got a big bowl)!
