Internet Marketing Sales & Income May 2009

Many people are interested in working from home, and Internet Marketing seems to be ideal for this. However it is hard to get information on exactly how much is earned. There are loads of sites telling you how much you CAN earn, (often promising £ thousands or even £ millions), but none telling you exactly how much IS earned.  This site will!

I intend to publish a Monthly update detailing precisely how much income I have achieved, along with Sales information. At the moment it is embarrassingly small amounts, but I will publish the exact details no matter how embarrassing. If I have earned ZERO then I will state this fact.

This is my first Accounting post so there will be some catch-up involved. Each month I will publish Sales figures, along with a running total.

I think it’s important for anyone considering Internet Marketing to see the exact figures from someone who is just starting up. You can then have a better idea of the reality, rather than some of the Instant Millionaire Hype that can pervade this market.

OK. Here goes;

I started Internet marketing March 2008 and for the 15 months up to May 2009 I have earned a grand total of £257.85

I have a mailing list of 96 people.
60 with Postal Addresses
36 with eMail address only

That’s an average Monthly Income of  £17.19

However that is NOT even profit. I have spent far more than that.
£2,500 was spent on producing full colour covers for some square-bound manuals that in the first flush of enthusiasm I was sure I would need. I have sold precisely 5 manuals so far.

I believe it is possible to earn a good living on-line, but this is my experience so far. I am funding my lifestyle from the profits I made in a previous direct mail business.

The best way to start Internet Marketing is PART-TIME. You need an income from another source to fund your start-up costs.

  1. Hi John –

Very brave of you to do this when you’re first starting out – but it can be very inspirational. I follow Caroline Middlebrook (Caroline-Middlebrook/blog) and she does much the same thing except she’s much further along than we are but it is interesting to see where she gets her income from.

And yes – it is expensive to start out – every business has start up costs and I think it is especially hard for people looking to earn an income online to have the courage to say “enough”. “I know enough to get going and have enough to get me earning – all I need to do now is focus”. I read a brilliant post on the Warrior Forum today which was all about building an online business (focus) rather than building multiple (unrelated) income streams. Very interesting.

    Cheers!

    Susan

Hello Susan, I think you're right about focus. It's so easy to be diverted onto different projects, most of which end up half-completed. John

  2. Hi John,

This is a really good post, thank you for sharing this with us. It is a great idea to keep tabs on what is happening in terms of income and expenditure. And Susan, I would be interested to read the post from the Warrior forum. Can you point me in the right direction?

    Enjoy the journey.

    Mandy

Thanks Mandy. I will also give an outline of my activity. Having it published every month may stop me being too lazy:O) John

  4. Hi John

Good idea and interesting to note your blog comments. I like most of JTs masterclass students want to make a living on-line but I am realsitic to know that it may take a couple of years of hard work before you can even begin to think about leaving your full time job.
Thanks for stopping by Tom. Good luck with your business plans. John
