Marvel Comics – Oils on Canvas

Captain America

Captain America - Jim Steranko cover #111

Silver Surfer

Silver Surfer - Jack Kirby cover Fantastic Four #72

I have sold the majority of my childhood comic collection, but have regained pleasure from comics by painting some of my favorite covers.

I used to draw and paint entirely by eye, which involved a lot of rubbing out. However I don’t see the point of this now, when I can easily trace the image I want, which just leaves me to concentrate on the painting.

I am using oils on canvas with frames of various sizes, depending upon the image I want to recreate. I like to work on numerous paintings at the same time, which means I can put the same colour onto a lot of canvases; – these three have had the red treatment. :-)

Spiderman #33

SpiderMan - Steve Ditko cover #33

Choosing my favourite comic covers meant starting  oil paintings by three of Marvel’s greatest artists; Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko and Jim Steranko.

They are all works in progress but  I should have them completed in the next couple of weeks, while also starting new canvases so that I have plenty to work on. I would like to have around 20 paintings in various stages of completion to get a production-line going.

I am taking too long on each painting at the moment, but will no doubt speed up with practice and as my brush skills improve. I will have to sell a few of them otherwise my house will fill up. :-)

Next 4 paintings are; The Simpsons, X-Men and scenes from Clockwork Orange and 2001 a Space Odyssey. If you think you may be interested please leave a comment.

  2. abstract paintings…

What do you actually see when you look at the painting? Color, shape, line and texture are the physical elements that combine to make up the image….

  3. Colour is important to me, that's why I like Pop Art - plenty of opportunities to use bright colours! ;-)
