Replying to Blog Comments

The easiest way to reply to a blog comment is simply to fill-in the blog comment form yourself. However this does pose a couple of problems.

Firstly your own reply is counted as a comment, so the blog statistics are innaccurate having been inflated by 100%. (You would need to half the number of comments to get a true reflection of outside response).

Secondly, if you don’t reply immediately, your response could be out of sequence and confusing for readers. This would only happen on  blogs with lots of comments. Our Masterclass has a very popular blog at www.mandyallen.com and even Mandy’s high work rate has not prevented some of her replies inevitably being posted out of sequence.

“OK John. You’ve given us the problems, what’s the solution?”

Instead of using the comment form go to your blog dashboard at YOURBLOG.COM/wp-admin. On the left hand side click on Comments. You will now see a list of all your post comments. Click on Edit underneath the message you want to respond to.

You can now type a reply below the message. To make it look different, highlight the text and click i on the icons above, this turns it all into italics. Then highlight the text again and click code. This highlights your reply with the blog's colour theme, in my case it's light blue. If you want to see what this looks like click on comments on any of my posts.

Using this method has the added advantage of being able to visually see which comments have been responded to. When I worked out this system, I changed all my post comments and found 2 or 3 that I had forgotten to reply to……. I hope this helps everyone out there in blog-land.

  1. Ooh, John, that’s a good idea – another afternoon of work while I go through my nearly 150 comments and change them all, great idea though, thanks! And you’re right, some of my responses are very out of sync.

    Enjoy the journey.

It's a big job for you Mandy. 'Luckily' my blog had far fewer comments :O) John

  2. Good things come to those who wait, John. How did you get your reply in a box?

    Enjoy the journey.

    Mandy

  3. Oh, durrr, just read the box again… thanks, do you realise I have 14 pages of comments to do???

    Enjoy the journey.

    Mandy
I was thinking about that. I hope you are copying your original message, then pasting in the reply. Just a thought! John

  4. Just found out if you have lines between the text it only colours from the top to the first break. As I always sign off with

    Enjoy the journey.

    Mandy

it means that those two lines are not in the box. It doesn’t matter, just thought I’d mention it. I tried ‘code’ before and after the italic.

    Enjoy the journey.

The code can be temperamental. If it goes wrong, just delete and try again. I like my name in bold, but found that I have problems if I change this first. So I change (1) Italics (2) Bold (3) Code....John

  5. Thanks, John. I am indeed copying my reply and pasting it in before deleting the original. Just to save any mistakes!

    Enjoy the journey.

Just had a look at your blog Mandy. The replies in italics look good, and I see you managed to get one blue box, despite the space for "Enjoy the journey". John

  6. Hi John,
Thank you very much for this tip. I make things look great and more professional.
    All apply it straight away.

Glad to be of help Mostafa. I have just looked at your blog and see you have already started. It looks good. John
