Stardust and Michael Jackson
The world is coming to terms with the shocking death of Michael Jackson. I can’t help thinking however that Jarvis Cocker could have saved him from his own excesses.

I am not a religious person, but when I saw the live 1996 BRIT awards, I couldn’t believe my eyes. Here was a man impersonating Jesus, with a white flowing cloak, spotlights behind him, and a wind machine, so that he was both glowing and windswept.
Then unbelievably he had groups of children coming up to him to be blessed. “Suffer the little children to come unto me” said the Lord (Mark 10:13-14). And at that moment I believe that Michael Jackson thought he was some sort of diety.
Power and fame corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Michael Jackson did not have anyone to ground him into reality, his entourage were all dependant upon him for their livliehood. This is not uncommon.
Ringo Star received plaudits for his role in the film ‘That’ll be the Day’ however he refused to be in the follow up film ‘Stardust’. For Ringo it was too near the truth about Beatlemania.
Unfortunately when I saw Michael Jackson give his Jesus impression at the 1996 BRIT awards, it reminded me of the end of the film Stardust, when David Essex had gone mad with fame.
I tip my hat to Jarvis Cocker for baring his bum at this blasphemy. If only Michael Jackson had more people like Jarvis Cocker around him, he may still be alive today.

Great post, John. Totally agree with you. Power is far too intoxicating.
Enjoy the journey.

Thanks Mandy. I'm hoping England copies the American safeguard of a 'maximum 2 term' Presidency, that way we can avoid having an elected dictatorship.John[Reply]

Michael Jackson's whole life was like a TV 'reality show', It had no basis in the real world. He was deprived of a genuine childhood, hence his adult fascination with Peter Pan and children. This should be a warning for any other pushy parents who try and make their children 'stars'. Fame isn't worth it.John
