The Dream of Scipio by Iain Pears

The Dream of Scipio by Iain Pears is set in France over three time periods at critical moments in history. The 5th century and the collapse of the Roman Empire, the 14th century and the arrival of the Black Death plague and the 20th century  with the second world war.

This sounds interesting – and it is, however my advice to any new readers would be to skip the first 133 pages, and to start reading the book in ‘Part Two’. The first 50 to 60 pages are some of the most impenetrable and confusing narrative in literature. They would put you off if you attempted to read them, and they don’t really add anything to the novel.

Dream of ScipioLuckily the book is split into two parts, and in my paperback version the second part starts on page 137. I would recommend anyone to read from here and they will get a fascinating insight into life over three different time periods in France. I cannot however recommend the book as a whole because of part one.

The book concerns itself with philosophy and theology, and has an anti-Christian bias. The only section of part one I thought was of note, was a critique of Roman Catholicism; Page 71 “Repeat after me, and live forever. The less you know, the better it is.”

Also on page 70 yet another ‘reason’ for the persecution of Jews; “The resurrection of the body, which I understand to be a stage in the second coming, cannot take place until all Jews embrace Christ. Saint Paul says so….”

If you are interested in history, philosophy and theology this book is for you.

  1. Hi John
Thanks for the tip, I have just reserved the book at my local library,I will let you know what I think when I’v finished it.
At the moment I am reading Heloise and Abelard, by James Burge. It is very interesting , accessible and informative about 12th century life in France. I think you would enjoy it.
    Best wishes

I'm worried now Ann! - I hope you like the second part. I shall have a look at the James Burge book in my library. Thanks for visiting the reading room. :-) John

  2. Hi John,

I really like the idea of the book reviews! Maybe you should create your own book review site where everyone can give opinions of books they have read. A bit like the book club concept but online!

    Food for thought. :D
