Who are your Customers?
If you have only just started Internet Marketing you might not have any customers yet, or not enough to analyse, but it’s important you have an idea of who they are. If you have a vision in your mind of your typical customer you will be able to communicate with them effectively.
When writing a sales letter or web-page you need to empathise with the prospective customer, and to do this you need to know who they are. Often they are someone very similar to you. Like attracts like.
I love drinking beer so it was natural for me to organise beer festival holidays. I knew what I would want on a boozing holiday, so I created the perfect trip for my customers. They seemed to appreciate it; I took around 10,000 people abroad every year.
I have been painting pop art images and always imagined that my customers would be someone like me. A bloke in his 50s, interested in science fiction and music. I paint things that had an influence or impact on me; John Lennon and the Beatles, films like 2001 a Space Odyssey and Clockwork Orange, and the Marvel comics I read as a kid.
Yesterday I had to re-evaluate my customer profile. I just sold a painting to a 11 year old boy, or to be more accurate his Mother. It was an image of Lord Voldemort, a baddie from the Harry Potter series. There is another potential market I was unaware of, parents who want a unique present for their child. Knowing this I can create paintings that would attract younger customers.
Look carefully at your own customer profile, there may be other avenues to exploit for sales, and they could come from unexpected quarters.

Howdy Sir,
I love your choice of art subjects and your prices are very reasonable indeed.
Organizing 10,000 people per yr on beer bashes must have been a blast. Why did you stop?
Thanks pal, have a grand day.

Barry,
I stopped the beer bashes for two reasons;
1) Divorce 2) Recession
I haven’t got a lot of money now, BUT I’m much happier.

Can you describe the qualities of a perfect client to yourself? You probably thought immediately of somebody in your business who’s the perfect client. Which is good because the first step in finding more perfect customers is to truly understand what a perfect customer should look like.

Hi John,
My first post on your blog (I found you over at Barry Wells blog)
Interesting how you create ‘pop art paintings.’
I think most people I see doing well on the internet are people who have an artistic flair either in art, music or whatever.
Those are the kind of people I like – the ones with imaginations..!
Cheers

I see you’ve got imagination as well John, I’ve just popped over to your blog and found a fascinating post on the Universe.
It’s interesting how a blogging community can develop. I have been visting Barry Wells blog regularly, and now you found me via Barry.
I hadn’t thought about art and music, but you’re right, I also gravitate towards those blogs with artistic flair, I would include writing as well though.
I hope you call back soon.
John
