Why I Like PUBS

Last night I was at St Mary’s church in Warwick for a performance of Handel’s Messiah. I have seen this performed once before, but had forgotten how long and boring it is!

The only bit’s I liked were “Are we like Sheep?” and “The Hallelujah Chorus” – but that was over an hour away. :-(  I was having trouble keeping my eyes open, and my girlfriend was having the same problem, so in the interval we ‘did a runner’.

The Zetland Arms was just outside the church, and over a pint of delicious real ale we decided not to go back. :-) Next pub was the Tilted Wig where we Slaughterhouse Alessaw a football match while imbibing a lovely local brew called “The Tilted Pig” from Slaughterhouse Ales. (Their brewery is on an old abattoir site).

Before returning home we thought we would pop into the Punch Bowl for some cheap Barnsley bitter. While enjoying our pint, we heard the strains of a Christmas carol coming from the other end The Punch Bowl, Warwickof the pub! When we walked over to see what was happening, we discovered a folk group and choir of about 20 people all having a great time.

It was a ‘retirement party’ that had been abandoned in December because of snow. Hence the Christmas carols in April! Everyone made us very welcome, and we were soon members of the choir singing along to the popular tunes.

THAT’S what I like about pubs……..they’re PUBLIC. Anyone can go in, and you never know who is there, or what is happening, until you go inside. The Punch Bowl  turned a disappointing Messiah into a fantastic Christmas experience! :-)

  1. Hi John,

Your posts are still A1, keep them coming.

Although I do like classical music, I find some can be boring. If it came to a choice like yours, I too would have opted for the real ale. As Oscar Wilde stated -

“I can resist anything but temptation”

Good quote Bill - I'd forgotten about that one. Church choir or Real Ale? - No contest. :-) John

  2. Hi John

Pubs have always been the backbone of this country along with the corner shop, unfortunately many of our pubs and shops are vanishing at an alarming rate, as the saying goes”use it or lose it” an english pub holds many wonders and you never know when you walk through the door for the first time of what experiences lie on the other side, but you certainly had a very enjoyable day!

    All the best

    Nick
Thanks for the comments Nick. It was the smoking-ban that started the licensed trade problems, followed by the recession and cheap supermarket alcohol. Real Ale is one of the few bright spots; sales are increasing. You can't drink quality real ale at home, so pubs that offer this have their USP. I'm certainly doing my best to frequent as many pubs as possible! :-) John

  3. I enjoyed this post, John, reminded me of my favourite pub, the Scotch Piper in Lydiate reputed to be the oldest inn in Lancashire (dates from the 14th century)
No juke box, real ale and the toilets are outside!
    Brilliant!!
That sounds good Stuart. I don't know why, but I always like it when the toilets are outside - (I suppose because it's becoming rare). John
