ZEN and the ART of BLOGGING

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle MaintenanceSome of the most boring blogs you can find, are those where every post is urging you to BUY, BUY, BUY, this latest product that you absolutely can’t be without.

These articles could be classified as Product Reviews, EXCEPT you never read a bad review! After all, the blogger won’t make any money out of saying how bad something is.

What’s  worse than the blatant sales pitch, are those blogs where the reviews aren’t even personal. They are just a rehash of the products sales page, or a PLR article scattered with BUY buttons.

These Blog owners are making a fundamental error. They know that the purpose of the blog is to make money, however by FOCUSING on this aspect, their blog loses QUALITY. If the blog has no quality it will lose traffic, and ultimately lose money.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is a famous book on philosophy, that sold millions of copies in the 1970′s.
The book criticises the scientific tradition of splitting the world between subject (YOU) and object (the BLOG). Instead the author advocates looking at the world as a whole, and the glue between subject and object is QUALITY.

Religious people also recognise how unsatisfactory the world is, when only perceived with a duality between subject and object. However their “glue” is called LOVE. The Beatles knew about this, but they didn’t need thousands of words to explain it, they could do it in one lyric. :-) “All You Need is Love”.

“Peace of mind produces right values, right values produce right thoughts. Right thoughts produce right actions, and right actions produces work which will be a material reflection for others to see of the serenity at the centre of it all. ” Robert M. Pirsig,  ‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance’ (1974) Bantam Books, page 267.

  1. Brilliant, John, and very true. I hate the ‘hard sell’ blogs and yes, most of the content is not written from experience fo the product, nor is it even written by the blog owner, they are usually pre written statements that come with the affiliate package.

    Enjoy the journey.

  2. That's really annoying Mandy, especially when it's a heavily promoted affiliate program. You end up seeing the exact same "recommendation" on different blogs? I thought Blogs were supposed to be PERSONAL!

  3. How very true John, I find them an instant turn off but unfortunately they are in the majority.

  4. I think they will drown in their own excess Bill. Nobody likes to read adverts all the time, that's why personal blogs like yours will succeed for the long term.

  9. I admire what you have done here. I like the part where you say you are doing this to give back but I would assume by all the comments that this is working for you as well.

  10. I'm simply doing what I enjoy. ;-) I'm not consciously trying to "give back", but if other people gain something from my experiences, that's a bonus. :-)
